Burning the Midnight Neon

I really enjoy shooting at night, and with the Vancouver 2010 Olympics now mere weeks away, I went out tonight to hone my low-light skills.  During the Olympics there will be no shortage of festivities and all manner of light shows in the evenings.  The West End is even going to have synchronized search lights sweeping the night skies in a choreographed photon ballet.

Most of my exposures this evening were from a few seconds long to a full thirty seconds.  The weather was warm, but clouded over and not much light from the near full moon.  I had to use the light from my iPhone to make adjustments while I was set up on my tripod.  Oh yeah, and just to remind me about the fiftieth thing, I sure could have used my reading glasses...

After about an hour of squinting in the dark I had a hell of a time adjusting my fine focus.

This shot was taken just south of the Lighthouse in Stanley Park.  Vancouver's lights and all the neon cast a wonderful glow against the low overcast cloud cover.

I think I ended up with an intriguing Flickr Set of the Vancouver Coal Harbor Lights - see Fifty in Photos on Flickr at the top of my Index.
