Nautilus

I have this nautilus shell, sectioned in half, and its lines, curves and shape never fail to intrigue me.  Something about the soft glow of mother of pearl and the palette inspired me this evening.  I tried shooting it with a number of different lenses and none of them seemed to quite click with what I was looking for, which was slightly reminiscent of a water-colour painting I had seen, or perhaps it was a colour plate in an old zoology text.  I didn't want tack sharp.  The images seemed too stark.  In the end, I used a Lensbaby composer on my D700 and then I started playing with the ISO.  I wanted a mixture of grain and the appearance of looking at the nautilus under a magnifying glass.  It took me numerous different combinations, but ultimately I came close to the image I had in my mind's eye.

  1. Great shot, Vince! I couldn't figure out how you got the defocused/movement effect around the edges. I may just have to get a lensbaby.

  2. I love the way you've made it look like this shot was taken under water!

  3. Thanks, all! I think that over the past year I've influenced at least half a dozen people to get a Lensbaby. I should be getting a commission.... :)

But I do love my Lensbaby shots.

  4. Was walking the sea wall in old Mazatlan this mornign and watched a guy risk his neck to 'lasso' a dead crab stuck on the rocks below him. He succeeded, and I hung around to watch him arrange the exotic brown speckled carcass into a museum piece. He thought I'd buy it from him, but what do I want with a dead crab? I had my camera but the battery had ran out ten minutes earlier. Woulda coulda shoulda. Vince, if you were here, you coulda and ya woulda.
